CCAs of NTU 25’: NTU Dragon boat

Written by: Mr. Tang Ka Soon, Spiritual & Pivotal Alumnus

Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned athlete, NTU Dragon Boat welcomes you to experience one of the most rewarding and exhilarating CCAs in NTU. We believe in pushing boundaries, embracing challenges, and growing together, as individuals and as a team.

Why Join Us?

Our ultimate goal is to win the Prime Minister’s Cup (PMC), the highest-level inter-varsity competition for Dragon Boat in Singapore. We are proud to celebrate our men’s team as four-time reigning champions and our women’s team for their impressive back-to-back victories.

But beyond medals and titles, NTU Dragon Boat is about challenging yourself, growing stronger, and becoming part of a tightly knit community. No prior experience is needed. While paddling or sports experience is welcomed, many of our strong paddlers started with zero background.

What Training Looks Like?

We train hard, and we train smartly.

Land Trainings: Held every Monday and Wednesday for Men’s Team, Tuesday and Thursday for Women’s Team, where these sessions will have us focus on strength, cardio, and functional movements that mimic paddling. The aim is to build fitness progressively which prepares you for water training.

Water Trainings: On Saturdays and Sundays, we head out to Kallang Water Basin or Bedok Reservoir for our on-water sessions with transport from school and Jurong East provided. This is where everything comes together, and you learn what Dragon Boat is truly about — teamwork, rhythm, and determination on water.

Commitment & Balance

We do expect our members to commit to training regularly, as consistency is key to both personal and team progress. That said, we recognize the importance of academics. Being a student athlete means managing both responsibilities. With good time management, you'll grow stronger both in and out of the boat.

A Community Like No Other

What makes NTU Dragon Boat special is the people. Our team reflects the diversity of Singapore's Dragon Boat scene, which we have students, professionals, people from all backgrounds coming together for a shared interest and passion for this sport. Everyone has different motivations for racing: competition, friendship, personal growth. And yet, we all end up paddling side by side, driven by shared goals and mutual respect.

We also maintain strong ties with the broader paddling community in Singapore, making NTU Dragon Boat a great way to connect beyond school life.

Racing Beyond Borders

Winning the PMC often opens doors to international competitions, an example would be Macau International Dragon Boat Race which is held in June every year. Invitational races provide the perfect platform to showcase the results of our hard work from local competitions. Undeniably, the experience is often unforgettable. The cold, chilly weather, high-stakes competition, and even with boats line up beside us where each representing some of the best teams in the region. No words can truly capture the adrenaline, the pressure, and the camaraderie we share, as they felt more deeply than they can ever be described, truly like nothing else.

A Final Word

Dragon Boat is not for the faint of heart, it’s for the dedicated. If you choose to join, you won’t just experience intense training, you will discover lasting friendships, unforgettable races, and a journey of personal growth you never saw coming.

If you are seeking a challenge, a purpose, and a team to call home, NTU Dragon Boat is ready for you. Lai NTU, SAH!!!
